MONROVIA, LIBERIA–The Government of Liberia has reacted to reports from some political actors and media that the Mano River Union Center for Regional Peace and Development, being constructed in Lofa County, is private property.
In a statement issued Tuesday, December 17, 2025, the government clarified that the Center is a public project owned by the state.
The facility is intended to host high-level sub-regional, regional, and international summits, conferences, and dialogues focused on mediation, conflict resolution, and fostering economic collaboration.
The government argues that sharing detailed blueprints and security layouts of a facility designed to host regional and global leaders, while it is under construction, is impractical.
The statement quotes the government as saying, “The recent unauthorized drone footage had demonstrated the very security risks the protocols aim to mitigate”.
Meanwhile, President Joseph Boakai and other senior government and security officials are expected to visit the project site this December, as part of a national development tour.
The project, with an estimated total investment of $ 6.1 million, is financed through a combination of contributions from national, regional, and global entities, as well as private individuals and businesses.
According to a GOL Statement, a formal regional launch of the fully completed MRU Center for Regional Peace and Development is planned for 2026.
The government says it anticipates broad participation from national and regional stakeholders, describing the project as a concrete affirmation of Liberia’s role as a peacemaker in the West African region.
