MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, has called for constant monitoring of the political and security situation in the region.
Dr. Touray said,” Such will help provide guidance and enable regional action”.
He named the management of Guinea-Bissau’s coup and post-attempted coup in Benin as some security issues needing urgent attention by the Commission.
The ECOWAS Commission President noted that West Africa continues to see the worst humanitarian crisis involving women and children.
Dr. Touray revealed that the data from the UNHCR Regional Bureau for West and Central Africa indicate that, as of October 2025, approximately seven million individuals were forcibly displaced across the region.
The number, according to him, reflects an increase of over seven million recorded 2025 in March 2025.
Meanwhile, the ECOWAS Commission President has assured member states that the Commission will continue to work harder to promote peace in the region.
Dr. Touray urged citizens of the West African region to remain committed to preserving regional unity, advancing peace, and upholding the community’s Constitutional Convergence Principles.
Dr. Omar Touray made the statement on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, during the 55th Session of the Mediation and Security Council at the Ministerial Levels in Abuja, Nigeria.
