War and Economic Crimes Court Executive Director Calls for Stronger Protection of Human Rights

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Executive Director of the War and Economic Crimes Court, Cllr. Jallah Barbu has called for stronger protection of human rights, as the country observes the International Day of Human Rights Defenders.

Speaking at the program on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at the program marking the 27th year’s celebration of the International Day of Human Rights Defenders, Cllr. Barbu stressed that human rights remain the foundation of peace, reconciliation, and national stability.

He also highlighted ongoing national efforts, including the pending establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court and the National Anti-Corruption Court actions.

Cllr. Barbu urged human rights defenders to strengthen their advocacy and avoid misrepresentation, unwarranted attacks, and the exaggeration of personal status.

He reminded the public that every person in Liberia, regardless of age, status, or immigration legality, is entitled to protection under the law.

Meanwhile, the War and Economic Crimes Court boss concluded by calling for continuous dialogue on human rights issues and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of all people.

For his part, the keynote speaker, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR) Country Representative, Christian Mukosa, praised the bravery of defenders of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), the death penalty, and prison conditions, among others.

Mukosa emphasized the need to turn Liberia’s human rights defenders’ policy into a law, something he said would offer much-needed legal protection and financial support for defenders nationwide.

The UNHCHR Representative reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting the Human Rights Defenders Coalition and strengthening collaboration with national partners.

The program was held under the theme: “Our Everyday Essentials.”

At the same time, the Liberia Coalition for Human Rights Defenders, Chairman, Neidoteh Torbor, is urging the government to recognize human rights defenders as essential partners.

Speaking at the program marking the International Day of Human Rights Defenders, Mr. Torbor noted that the United Nations 1998 Declaration recognizes and protects the work of activists.

He appealed for stronger legal protections, including the ratification of key human rights protocols, the abolition of the death penalty, among others.

Mr. Torbor also urged the government to ensure legal aid for vulnerable citizens and uphold international human rights rulings.

Chairman Tobor concluded by honoring the dedication of activists across the Country, especially women fighting gender-based violence.
