MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Richard Koon, has apologized for threatening to jail journalists who would record when the session at the Capitol has not been called to order.
According to Speaker Koon, he jokingly made the statement on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, when several lawmakers in the Chambers made jokes while awaiting the session to formally convene.
The Speaker stated that the jokes among the lawmakers were not meant for public record.
Speaker Richard Koon reaffirmed his respect for the rights of journalists and press freedom.
He urged journalists covering the National Legislature to be professional and cooperate with the rules convening the House of Representatives and the Liberian Senate.
Meanwhile, the Legislative Press Pool (LEGISPOOL), the governing body of journalists covering the National Legislature, has welcomed the open apology delivered in Chambers by the Speaker of the House, Richard Koon.
The Leadership of LEGISPOOL described the apology as a demonstration of maturity, leadership, and a genuine commitment to rebuilding trust between the lawmakers and the press.
According to a release, LEGISPOOL appreciates the Speaker’s call for improved collaboration and assured the public that journalists assigned to the National Legislature will remain committed to professionalism, ethical reporting, and fairness.
The organization underscored that press freedom, safety, and respect for journalists are foundational to Liberia’s democracy, noting that no journalist should feel threatened or intimidated while performing duties at the Capitol.
Meanwhile, the leadership of LEGISPOOL is encouraging all reporters to maintain high ethical standards and urges lawmakers and legislative staff to continue fostering an environment that supports transparency, mutual respect, and free reporting.
