Gov. of Liberia Revokes Four Chinese Nationals’ Work Permit

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Government of Liberia has revoked the work permit of four Chinese nationals working with Bangli, an iron ore mining company operating in Bong Mines, Bong County.

It followed an unannounced visit by the Minister of Labor, Cllr. Cooper Kruah, after a strike action by Liberian employees of the company in early November.

Minister Kruah named Li Hua, Zhang Wei, Zhang Wei Chai, and a Chinese national who fled the scene as those affected by the decision of the government.

In an interview with reporters during the visit, Minister Kruah mandated labor inspectors to gather detailed information about those affected and ensure that the decision is enforced.

The Minister of Labor also cautioned the Management of Bangli Iron Ore Mining Company to account for the escaped Chinese employee or face consequences under the Labor Law of Liberia.

Meanwhile, Minister Beysolow-Nyanti has given a thirty-day ultimatum to the company to develop and improve the welfare of employees, sanitation, and harmonize the working relationship in its concession area.

Minister Kruah wants the management of the company to construct a clinic and provide an ambulance, build toilets, and construct boreholes within the concession areas.

The Labor Minister also mandates that safety gears, including personal protective equipment, helmets, boots, and gloves for its employees, be procured within two weeks.

Minister Kruah also added that the company should improve its method of deducting Social Security tax from employees with a system of transparency.

Meanwhile, the Labor Minister thanked the Management of Bangli for signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide Liberians with jobs that are being done by the Chinese.
