Liberia Electricity Corporation to Increase Customer Connections…

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) is set to increase customer connections by seventy-four percent by 2028.

Currently, LEC said there are three hundred fifty-five thousand eight hundred three customers.

According to the LEC, the projected growth reflects planned grid expansion and an increase in available energy supply.

The Deputy Managing Director for Technical Services, Thomas Gonkerwon, said,” Electricity consumption is expected to rise by 154.7 percent, from 374 million kilowatt per hour in 2025 to 953 million kilowatt per hour in 2028.

Gonkerwon also said a 61.4 percent increase is projected in demand and enhanced generation capacity.

The LEC Deputy Managing Director for Technical Services was speaking over the weekend at separate public hearings on a proposed tariff application in Bomi and Grand Cape Mount Counties.

The two hearings brought together more than two hundred participants, including local government officials, civil society organizations, youth and women groups, business representatives, and customers of the Liberia Electricity Corporation.

Meanwhile, the Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) is currently reviewing the proposed tariff adjustments submitted by the LEC.

The LEC proposed that the Social Tariff be decreased by 13.3%, Non-Residential Prepaid be increased by 9.1%, Non-Residential Postpaid Tariff be increased by 9.1%, while Medium Voltage increased by 5.3%.

A release from the LERC said the current application represents a major review of electricity rate levels and structures across customer categories.

At the hearings, LERC Commissioners Amara Kamara and Atty. Kla Toomey said,” The Commission will continue its engagements in Grand Bassa, Margibi, Rivercess, and Montserrado Counties as part of its nationwide consultation on the LEC tariff proposal.

Meanwhile, the LERC is expected to review all comments and inputs received from stakeholders and provide analyses and recommendations.

The Commission’s decision on the tariff application is expected on December 8, 2025, and once approved, it will take effect on January 1, 2026.
