MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Vice President Jeremiah Koung says the attainment of peace in Liberia is not attributed to UNMIL of the Liberian government, but a collective achievement of all Liberians.
VP Koung said,” Those who served under the UN flag, peacekeepers, and civilians, paid the ultimate price for peace in Liberia enjoys today and, as such, Liberians should jealously guard their legacy by maintaining peace”.
He called on the youth to see peace as an opportunity and not a burden, and society must embrace reconciliation as a permanent path, not a temporary compromise.
VP Koung further urged leaders to view governance as service and not entitlement.
The Vice President’s message was contained in a statement read on his behalf by his Chief of Office Staff, Prince Menkalo Gbieu, on Wednesday, October 2, 2025, at the 22nd Anniversary of the UN Mission presence in Liberia, under the auspices of the former National Staff Association of the UN Mission in Liberia.
At the same time, UNMIL Staff Association Interim President, Abednego Kofie, stressed the need for the government to establish functional democratic institutions that will reform the country.
Kofie said,” Such endeavor, when achieved, will enable Liberia to gain its proper place as a founding member of the UN and other regional and international organizations.
According to him, democratic government is not electing people into offices, but also holding them accountable through a process that is grounded and protected by law.
The UNMIL Staff Association Interim President noted that these processes are vital in sustaining peace and achieving the government’s developmental agenda.
