MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) has released data that shows that the Liberian Dollar banknotes are being badly handled by the public.
According to the new CBL data, 1%, constituting 469 million Liberian Dollars of the 48.7 billion printed in 2021, has already been mutilated.
The Director of Banking at the Central Bank of Liberia, William Jlopleh, told ELBC “Money Matters” program on Wednesday, August, 27,2025, that the situation is concerning and needs quick intervention.
Jlopleh said,” The increasing wave of mutilation of the Liberian Dollar banknote has left the reserve vault with 11 billion, which could see printing of new banknotes in a few years”.
For his part, the Head of Corporate Communications at the Central Bank of Liberia, Cllr. Alphonsus Zeon disclosed that the Board of Governors has already approved a CBL Clean Note awareness campaign.
According to Cllr. Zeon, the campaign seeks to target all groups, including the Liberia Marketing Association (LMA) in all of Liberia’s fifteen Counties.
