MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The European Union, in collaboration with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, is set to shortly launch a five-million-dollar soil mapping project in Liberia.
The project, which is set to be implemented by the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture and the Ministry of Agriculture, seeks to dignify the type of soil in the country.
The Director of Land Development and Water Resources at the Ministry of Agriculture, Halala Kokulo, described the initiative as a game-changer for the Agriculture Sector of Liberia.
Director Kokulo told an ELBC interview on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, that the EU-funded soil mapping project, when implemented, will determine soil suitability for agricultural purposes, optimizing crop selection and yield.
The Agriculture Ministry Division of Land Development and Water Resources Director thanked the EU and partners for their continued support of the development drive of Liberia.
Meanwhile, Joseph Uponi, a Soil Analyst at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, says the EU’s project will bring huge investment to Liberia.
According to Uponi, as the implementing partner, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture has already conducted a vigorous scope study to determine the current status of the soil, ahead of the official launch of the project.
Uponi said,” The goal of the project is to increase productivity in Liberia”.
He disclosed that the project, when implemented, will also reduce environmental degradation in Liberia and ensure that the country achieves its rich potential in food production.
Soil Analyst Joseph Uponi assured the entity of its unflinching support for Liberia’s growth and development.
