VP Koung Commissions Nighttime Sailing Operations, New Equipment at Freeport of Monrovia

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Vice President Jeremiah Koung has commissioned nighttime sailing operations and new port equipment at the Freeport of Monrovia.

Vice President Koung, at the commissioning ceremony on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at the Freeport, emphasized the importance of the port in handling over eighty percent of Liberia’s trade activities.

He highlighted the port’s role as a driver of commerce, job creation, and private sector growth.

According to him, the newly commissioned equipment and extended operational hours are expected to improve service delivery and vessel turnaround time, helping the country to connect more efficiently to international markets.

He said.” These achievements fall under the government’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development, which seeks to modernize infrastructure and ensure compliance with global standards.”

The Vice President maintained that Liberia is investing in progress and is prepared to position itself as a regional hub for trade and economic opportunity.

Meanwhile, the Managing Director of the National Port Authority, Sekou Dukuly, has announced a game-changing upgrade to Liberia’s maritime infrastructure, with the launch of a nighttime navigational aid system at the Freeport of Monrovia.

Speaking at the official commissioning, Dukuly emphasized that this advancement is far more than symbolic.

According to him, for years, shipping companies faced costly delays and rerouted vessels to neighboring ports due to Liberia’s lack of nighttime navigation.

He claimed that with the new system in place, ships can now enter, discharge, and depart the port safely and efficiently, even after dark.

The NPA boss added that it is expected to lower the cost of doing business, attract greater international traffic, and establish Monrovia as a preferred port of call.

Sekou Dukuly affirmed that Liberia’s port is now better equipped to support trade, safety, and sustainable development, marking a major turning point for the Liberian people.
