WASH Legislative Caucus, WaterAid Liberia Launch Water Actions Month

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The WASH Legislative Caucus, a group of legislators pushing an improved WASH agenda at the Legislature, and WaterAid Liberia have launched the 2024 Water Actions Month under the theme “Water and Peace.”

The United Nations has set aside March each year as Water Actions Month, which coincides with World Water Day to be observed on March 22, with awareness of better and safer water for consumption.

During the launch in Monrovia on Friday, March 1, 2024, WaterAid Liberia Country Director, Chuchu Selma, outlined activities planned for the month and assured of his organization’s continued support to the country’s WASH sector.

Mr. Selma stressed the need for all to get involved in championing the cause for better, clean, and safe water.

According to the WaterAid Liberia Country Director, the organization has no specific government to work with and its work with the previous government was cordial with some progress made in the WASH sector.

“With the coming in of this new administration, there is hope,” Mr. Selma added. He expressed confidence in the newly appointed heads of the Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation and the WASH Commission, people he pointed out have been working in the sector.

For his part, WASH Legislative Caucus Chairman, Grand Bassa County Representative, Thomas Goshua, disclosed that as part of the Water Action Month, the rebrand of the WASH Legislative Caucus will be launched.

“We are going to energize and organize this important organ of the Legislature to ensure that we give key attention to the issue of WASH in our country,” Representative Gosuah assured.

He explained that as part of activities of the WASH Legislative Caucus during this March, legislators that are part of the group will be working on a work plan to implement during the year to have the issue of WASH information dissemination to the people and work to implement policies on the book.

This observance of World Water Day on March 22nd this year marks 31 years since the United Nations set the day aside in 1993 to raise awareness and call for action for better, clean, and safe water for mankind.
