MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Grand Bassa County Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence has been elected as the new Pro-Tempore of the Liberian Senate.

ELBC Reporter at the Liberian Senate said Senator Lawrence was unopposed as her close challenger, Gbehzongar Findley, declined his nomination as a candidate before the elections.

Minutes after being declared winner, she was sworn in and the gavel of authority was turned over to her by Grand Kru County Senator, Albert Chie, who has been in the position since 2018.

Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence now becomes the second female to be elected President Pro-Tempore of the Liberian Senate.

Former Montserrado County Senator Grace Minor holds the record as the first female President Pro-Tempore of the Liberian Senate, having served from 2002 to 2003.

At the same time, the newly inducted Senate Pro-Tempore has outlined her plan of action for the first one hundred days in office.

Senator Lawrence said her plan will focus on strengthening legislative processes, including open and transparent Legislative proceedings.

Others include enhancing Legislative oversight and improving the Legislative work environment to include the welfare of Legislative staff.

She also vowed to declare her assets and liabilities this week to promote transparency and accountability.

The Senate Pro-Tempore of the Liberian Senate then called on her colleagues to do the same.
