Representatives of 55th Nat’l Legislature to Elect New Speaker and Deputy Speaker

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Representatives of the 55th National Legislature are expected to elect a new Speaker and Deputy Speaker next Monday.

According to ELBC Legislative Reporter, the election is in line with Rule 6 of the Rules and Procedures of the House of Representatives.

Our Reporter said the body will also conduct the election for the Chief Clerk and sergeant-at-arms, among others.

Grand Kru County District-Two Representative, Fonati Koffa, and Montserrado County District-Eleven Representative, Richard Koon, are the candidates opting for the position.

According to our reporter, the race between the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and Unity Party (UP) is highly contested given the command of support both candidates have.

There has been intense lobbying among lawmakers as the candidates make their last push for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives of the 54th National Legislature is expected to adjourn its final sitting, paving the way for the inauguration of the 55th.
