ECOWAS Observer Mission to Liberia Threatens…..

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-ECOWAS Observers Mission to Liberia has threatened to hold Unity Party (UP) Spokesman, Mo Ali, personally accountable for defamatory statements made against the regional bloc.

In a Facebook post, Mr. Ali accused ECOWAS Observers Mission of receiving one-hundred-fifty-thousand US Dollars to declare a purported rigged election as transparent, free, and fair.

The accusation, according to ECOWAS, puts the safety and personal integrity of the Mission Observers at risk, ahead of Thursday’s run-off election.

In a statement issued over the weekend, ECOWAS Head of Elections Observer Mission in Liberia, Professor Attahiru Jega, called on the UP to denounce what it called a reckless and defamatory statement made against it by its  Campaign Spokesman, Mo Ali.

Professor Jega also re-emphasized the Mission’s neutrality in the November 14 Presidential Run-Off Election and further reaffirmed ECOWAS’ total commitment to a credible, inclusive, and peaceful electoral process.

Meanwhile, the UP Chief Spokesman has backtracked on his statement against the ECOWAS Observer Mission and issued an erratum.

In a post on Sunday, November 12, 2023, Mr. Ali clarified that there was no contact and disbursement of funds made to ECOWAS Observer Mission as previously stated by him.

In his post, the UP Official also applauded ECOWAS for its continued contributions to the consolidation of Liberia’s democracy over the years.

Up to press time, ECOWAS Mission has not rejected or accepted Mr. Ali’s erratum after his latest post.
