Liberia Commemorates 20 Years of Peace

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Liberia will today Friday commemorate twenty years of uninterrupted peace.

The celebration marks the signing of the Accra Peace Accord in 2003.

In an ELBC interview on Thursday, August 17, 2023, the Head of Kukatunon, a Mano River-based organization, Judee Endee, reminded stakeholders of the importance of maintaining the peace being enjoyed by Liberians.

Ambassador Endee called on Liberians not to instigate violence but promote peace in the country.

The commemoration of the day will begin with a parade from the Congo Town Police Depot to the Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf Ministerial Complex, with Liberian Government Officials and guests in attendance.

At the same time, the United States Embassy near Monrovia has congratulated Liberia in observance of twenty years of unbroken peace.

On August 18, 2003, Liberia’s warring factions of the country’s brutal civil war signed the Accra Comprehensive Peace Agreement to end fourteen years of fighting which claimed thousands of lives.

The US Embassy said such a milestone highlights the enormous sacrifices of ordinary Liberians, especially women, youth, civil society, and religious groups that ended the civil crisis.

It noted that Liberia should be proud of the achievement, while the United States continues to be a strong partner.

Meanwhile, the US Embassy has urged all political parties to adhere to the Farmington River Declaration and keep their commitment to free, fair, and peaceful October 10 Elections.
