Labor Ministry orders ArcelorMittal-Liberia to pay more than US250,000

MOPNROVIA, LIBERIA-The Ministry of Labor has ordered ArclorMittal-Liberia to pay over 500 former workers of the company, who were lay-off from 2013 to 2017.

The order followed a period of investigation conducted by the Ministries of Labor and Justice into a case of bad labor practice filed by aggrieved former workers.

Labor Minister Cllr. Charles Gibson said:” ArcelorMittal-Liberia is to begin the payment of more than US 300,000. to the former workers, beginning Thursday, September 23, 2021.”

Reading findings into the investigation, Minister Gibson said the Company did not address the status of the workers in keeping with the Labor Law before laying-off workers without benefits.

He said ArcelorMittal-Liberia should have given full employment status after working, as contractors for over three-years consistent with the Labor Laws of Liberia.

The aggrieved workers staged series of protests in recent times in demand of benefits in Nimba and Grand Bassa Counties. By (Kolubah Zayzay)
