NaFAA locks in discussions with stakeholders to end illegal fishing in Liberia

MONROVIA, LIBERIA -The National bisheries and Aquaculture Authority, NaFAA has begun a two – day technical fisheries workshop aimed at ending illegal fishing in Liberian waters.

The gathering, jointly organized by NaFAA and the Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC), has brought together stakeholders from the maritime and fishery sectors and international Partners.

Speaking at the opening ceremony in Monrovia Tuesday, September 21, 2021, NaFAA Director General, Emma Glassco disclosed that her entity has put in place policies which have seen support for small-scale fisheries and indigenous people through Collaborative Management Associations.

She indicated that NaFAA and stakeholders are “ensuring decent working conditions for all fishers, including safety at sea.

The NaFAA Boss noted that those steps are essential in the fight against illegal, unregulated, and unreported fishing.

She maintained that along with related international instruments, Liberia needs a universal design to eliminate such practice.

Speaking earlier, the Secretary General of the FCWC Dedi Nadji said the gathering aims to inform participants on the international instruments on maritime governance, both at regional and national levels.
