Liberia’s Solicitor General prefers Traditional Justice Committee to War and Economic Crimes Court

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Solicitor General of Liberia says he prefers the establishment of a Traditional Justice Committee in addressing crimes committed during the Liberian Civil War.

Cllr. Cyrenius Cephas said:” Such move will bring perpetrators of crimes face to face with victims in seeking forgivingness.”

Cllr. Cephas noted that the creation of a war crimes court will require a national referendum, and an amendment of the Liberian Constitution.

He asserted that when a law is ratified, it becomes subordinate to the constitution.

Providing expert opinion on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report, the Liberian Solicitor General said economic crimes are domestic and should be adjudicated by the Criminal Court ‘C’.

He was speaking on Wednesday, June 30, 2021, at the Senate Hearing on proposed Transitional Justice Commission.
