Nat’l Public Health Institute dismisses talk of COVID-19 Lockdown

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has dismissed talk of an imminent nationwide lockdown as being speculated on the social media.

NPHIL made specific reference of a post from Grand Bassa County Senator, Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, urging the public to prepare for a lockdown in a day or two.

In a statement, NPHIL said health authorities have not made any decision on the imposition of a lockdown at the moment.

It said when such decision is made; it will be communicated to the general public by the Incident Management System (IMS).

NPHIL is, meanwhile, urging the public to remain calm and continue to follow the safety protocols on COVID-19.

At the same time, Health Minister Wilhelmina Jallah says the 14 Military Hospital will begin admitting COVID-19 patients beginning this Wednesday, June 30, 2021.

Speaking in an ELBC interview on Monday, June 28, 2021, Dr. Jallah said, as it stands; major work is being done ahead of its opening.

The Liberian Health Minister added that in the meantime the two building at Star Base on the Bushrod Island will be used to host patients simultaneously until the reopening of the 14 Military Hospital.

Minister Jallah then urged state security to beef up enforcement of the health protocols at various public spaces, including entertainment centers.
