Liberia’s Education Sector at “Red Alert”, needs serious intervention

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Education Minister Ansu Sonii says Liberia’s Education Sector is at a ‘Red Alert’, and needs serious intervention.

Minister Sonii said:” If Liberia’s human capital is to grow, the Country must work towards reducing the deficit in assess quality and relevance in the sector.”

He spoke Monday, May 3, 2021, at the start of a Joint Education Sector Review Conference taking place in Gbarnga, Bong County.

The Education Minister urged participants to develop strategies and methods in improving the Education Sector of Liberia.

Meanwhile, the Chairpersons on Education at the Liberian Senate and the House of Representatives have vowed to lobby with their colleagues, for more budgetary allotment for the sector.

Speaking in separate interviews recently, Senator Prince Moye said consultation is ongoing to ensure allotment to education is increased to put Liberia on par with other nations in the sub-region.

Senator Moye said:” When the budget proposals are submitted, they will engage with stakeholders to ensure there is a jump, as compare to the previous budget year.”

For her part, Representative Marriama Fofana said that she will also lobby with her colleagues to ensure that twenty-five-percent of the National Budget is spent on education.

Both Lawmakers spoke on the sideline of the Joint Education Sector Review taking place in Gbarnga, Central Liberia.
