Gov.’s Lawyers denied extorting money from rape suspects’ families…..

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Government lawyers have denied extorting money from families of rape suspects, to restore their freedom after the victims reportedly signed a waiver to end litigation against them.

Recently, several families accused prosecuting lawyers from the Sexual Offense Unit of the Ministry of Justice, of demanding money from them to release their relatives from prison, following their victims’ request to end prosecution in connection with their matters.

However, the Director of the Sexual Offense Unit, Clllr.Issac George, told ELBC Judicial Reporter on Tuesday, January 12, 2021, that the claims by families of the defendants of extortion were false and misleading.

Though Cllr. George admitted to several waivers signed by victims, he noted that the victims’ families do not have the legal authority to end litigation, on grounds that crimes are committed against states.
