Mob Attack Leaves Zubawuo Family in Devastation

Monrovia, Thursday, January 3, 2021 – Recent attacks by a violent mob in Kpain Town, Margibi County has left a Liberian family in absolute devastation and fearing for their lives.

Peter G.W. Zubawuo and his family have not only been brought down to ‘square one’ but continue to face assassination threats, even months after the incident.

It can be recalled, on April 6, 2020, a violent mob attacked Zubawuo’s home and businesses in Kpain’s Town, Margibi County, following an altercation involving his son, and a local youth named Solomon.

Motivated by ethnic tension, the mob attacks led to the destruction of all his properties, including a motel, pharmacy, video club, and a provision shop.

These facilities were broken into, damaged and looted by the violent mob that also set ablaze Zubawuo’s residence in Kpain Town, leaving the family with nothing.

Following the incident and due to fear of their lives, Zubawuo and his family moved to the County’s Capital, Kakata seeking safety.

However, any hopes of finding refuge soon disappeared as Zubawuo and family continue to be on the receiving end of unabated threats and harassments which have left them in constant fear.

Speaking to State Radio about the situation, Zubawuo said local authorities initially responded when the incident happened but have since been unable to provide protection, neither any security guarantees.

The trauma from these attacks has been detrimental. His pregnant wife gave birth prematurely as a result.

Zubawuo believes, he and family are being targeted and persecuted because of their ethnic background, with attackers showing real intent to cause harm and further devastate the family.

These attacks raised questions of human right violations, especially the right to life, liberty, and security as enshrined in the Liberian Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

“My family and I attempted to find safety within Liberia by relocating from Kpain’s Town to Kakata City. Despite this move, the threats and harassment persisted, indicating that we could not escape the reach of those who wish to harm us. The mob’s influence and network extended beyond our initial location, making it clear that no part of Liberia could guarantee our safety” Zubawuo added in an interview with this station.

Thanks to initial response from Police in Marshall City, Zubawuo’s wife and children were rescued after being trapped inside their burning house. Those trapped in the fire were Zubawuo’s wife Angie Zubawuo who was five months pregnant at the time, 14 year old daughter, Joy Zubawuo, Teta, Bella and her baby (Zubawuo’s grandson), 17 year old Sumo Zubawuo and Gift Zubawuo.

With persistent threats, Zubawuo and his family continue to live in fear and sometimes had to go into hiding or shielding their identity just to be safe.
