Liberian Gov’t warns citizens against involvement in ethnic conflict in neighboring Guinea

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Liberians have been warned against their involvement into ongoing ethnic conflict between Lormas and Mandingos in Guinean.

On Monday, December 28, 2020, ELBC Lofa County Correspondent confirmed the ongoing ethnic clashes between Mandingos and Lormas on the Guinean side of the border town of Masanta.

But, speaking in an ELBC Monday, Internal Affairs Minister, Varney Sirleaf, warned Liberians, especially Liberian Lormas and Mandingoes, against interfering into the conflict in neighboring Guinea.

Minister Sirleaf said: “The Liberian Government and their Guinean counterparts are jointly working out modalities to avoid spill-over of the conflict and to restore calm to the area”.

At the same time, the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Liberia, Major/General Prince C. Johnson, said the joint security is continuing its regular border surveillance with neighboring Guinea and Ivory Coast.

Major General Johnson said the army is on the stand-by if additional security concerns require further intervention by the army in line with the laws of the country.
