George Werner Ends Senatorial Bid for Grand Kru

Monrovia, Liberia – Former Liberian Education Minister George Werner has decided against contesting the mid-term Senatorial election in Grand Kru County.

Mr. Werner had made his intentions for the Grand Kru top seat clear earlier this year to run against incumbent Senator Peter Coleman.

The Former Minister has been exploring possibilities of achieving his quest with the holding of top level and town hall meetings ahead of the December polls.

However in a post on his official Facebook account earlier this week, Mr. Werner said he was suspending his Political aspirations, due to the significant resources required to mount a successful campaign amid Covid-19 circumstances.

Former Minister Werner wrote “Over the past several months, it has been a privilege to engage with people across Grand Kru County, learning about the challenges they face, and discussing their priorities for the future. From improving education and healthcare to creating quality jobs for young people and supporting fishermen and women in business, it is clear there is much work to be done to unleash the full potential of our great County. Unfortunately, I have made the difficult decision to suspend my political aspirations, due to the significant resources required to mount a successful campaign under these Covid-19 circumstances”.

But Mr. Werner has however maintained that Grand Kru County still need a change and a different voice from what the people have become accustomed to.

He added “When I first announced my intentions, I noted that I was not running against anyone, but rather, against time. Grand Kru still urgently needs a different voice than what we’ve been receiving – and political representation is not the only way to bring out this voice. We have to find nonconventional ways to help our people marshal their energy to unleash their potentials”.

“I shall remain engaged in Grand Kru to pursue a clear nongovernmental agenda that is consistent with my passion for human capital development and entrepreneurial thinking. Even as I suspend my ambitions, I am announcing the Grand Kru Rising Business Idea Competition – a program that I hope will serve as fuel for the engine of a movement of young Grand Kru entrepreneurs. The details of this program will be forthcoming” Werner further stressed.

The former Education Minister, who hailed from Grandcess, Grand Kru County, concluded his statement to appreciate and thank “all those who, in words and deeds, have given me support and guidance. I ask that you continue to stand with me in the fight to achieve our goals of making Grand Kru a proud county”.
