MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Members of the House of Representatives are reviewing a proposal to reduce the salaries of lawmakers and some senior government officials.
The move is part of efforts to generate additional revenue for national development.
The proposal also calls for a review of duty-free privileges and exemptions granted to concession companies.
The lawmakers said this will free up funds and improve support to critical social services in health and education, and increase the salaries of civil servants.
The proponent, Representative Musa Bility, said,” The proposed measures could help recover significant public resources to address the pressing needs of the Liberian people”.
Under the proposal, proceeds generated from the reductions would be allocated to development initiatives, with each electoral district expected to receive one million dollars to support local development.
