MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Government of Liberia has announced a new transport system to enhance affordability and fairness across the country.
The Deputy Minister for Land and Rail Transport, Rudolph Natt, said,” The decision followed global petroleum prices, which have impacted transportation costs and placed a burden on citizens”.
Natt noted that the new fare system is designed to address key challenges faced by commuters, including high and inconsistent transport costs affecting students, workers, and traders.
According to him, the new structure focuses on three priorities: affordability, fairness, and sustainability, ensuring that transport remains accessible while supporting operators.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transport has begun deploying inspectors, in collaboration with the Liberia National Police, to enforce the new fares and ensure compliance nationwide.
At the same time, Deputy Minister Natt says the new fare structure reflects current economic realities and aims at protecting commuters from exploitation.
He disclosed that under the new system, bus fares from Broad Street to key destinations have increased from 100 LD to 120 LD, while taxi fares on similar routes have also been adjusted.
The Deputy Minister emphasized that the reform is not only about pricing, but about improving the overall transport system to support economic growth and national development.
Deputy Minister Rudolph Natt then called on operators and the public to cooperate with the new measures, stressing that the initiative is key to building a more efficient and reliable Transport Sector.
