MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The National Port Authority (NPA) has launched a major capacity-building initiative under the EU-funded Scope Africa program to strengthen port security and maritime safety standards nationwide.
NPA Deputy Managing Director for Administration, James Bernard, said,” The training marks Liberia’s first participation, targeting improved operational readiness within the port’s security and fire service divisions”.
Bernard disclosed that twenty-five personnel from the port’s fire service unit benefited from the initial four-day basic firefighting training, forming the foundation for broader security sector training this year.
He explained that the program is designed to develop participants into certified trainers, ensuring knowledge transfer and long-term sustainability across port operations and Liberia’s wider maritime safety framework.
A European Union trainer, Sandy Cranston, praised participants’ enthusiasm and commitment, noting that the training began with basic competencies to standardise knowledge before advancing to specialised port safety and emergency response skills.
Cranston said the multi-year program will incorporate continuous assessments, collaboration with national fire services, and structured reporting to ensure transparency in Liberia’s port security systems.
