President Joseph Boakai has declared Wednesday, March 11, as “Decoration Day”, to be observed throughout Liberia as a national holiday.
The proclamation aligns with an Act of the National Legislature, which was passed on October 24, 1916, declaring the 2nd Wednesday in March of each year as “Decoration Day”.
The Presidential Proclamation calls on ministries, agencies, local and international organizations, and the public to join the education ministry to organize and execute appropriate programs to make the day meaningful.
The proclamation also orders that the National Ensign be flown at half-mast from six in the morning to six in the evening.
The day aims to celebrate the memory of all those who have died, while keeping alive the love and hope that binds citizens, families, and residents of the country.
Meanwhile, the education ministry is expected to observe the day through specially planned programs aimed at raising awareness amongst the population on the deeds and contributions of great men and women and their loved ones.
The program, according to a release, will bring together students, government officials, national leaders, and educators, among others.
The Presidential Proclamation noted that an indoor program commemorating the day will be held at the Providence Baptist Church in Central Monrovia.
The statement added that President Joseph Boakai will deliver a Special National Decoration Message on the occasion.
