Liberia and Egypt have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on diplomatic training and academic exchange.
The MoU was signed by Liberia’s Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow-Nyanti and the Foreign Minister of Egypt Badr Abdelatty, on the margins of the African Union Summit in Adidas Ababa, Ethiopia.
The agreement establishes a partnership between the Gabriel L. Dennis Foreign Service Institute of Liberia and Egypt’s Institute of Diplomatic Studies.
It aims at strengthening diplomatic capacity through training programs, academic exchanges, joint research, and professional collaboration.
During the signing ceremony, the two foreign ministers reflected on the longstanding relations between the two countries.
Minister Abdelatty congratulated Liberia on its election to the UN Security Council and expressed confidence in Liberia’s leadership in advancing Africa’s interests.
Discussions also focused on prioritizing military, police, and intelligence cooperation, as well as energy, food security, diplomacy, and political consultations for coordination of African positions at the UN.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Beysolow-Nyanti welcomed Egypt’s proposals and expressed appreciation for its support of Liberia’s successful UN Security Council bid.
She proposed the convening of a Liberia-Egypt Business Forum and suggested a state visit by President Boakai to Egypt, an idea welcomed by the Egyptian side.
As immediate outcomes of the engagement, Egypt committed to sponsoring five Liberian participants for diplomatic training in Egypt.
A Foreign Ministry release added that discussions will continue toward the proposed state visit of President Boakai to Egypt in August, as well as an invitation for Minister Sara Beysolow-Nyanti to sign a Joint Commission Agreement in April.
