MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Ministry of Education is expected to distribute school health and hygiene kits to at least ten thousand at-risk students across Liberia.
The disclosure was made on Monday, January 26, 2026, by Education Minister Dr. Jarso Jallah, during the official launch of the school health and hygiene program at the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Ministerial Complex in Congo Town.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Jallah emphasized the critical role of hygiene in ensuring consistent learning and attendance.
She pointed out that many students, especially adolescent girls, face frequent absences due to the lack of menstrual hygiene support, which increases their risk of falling behind and disengaging from school altogether.
The Minister said,” The initiative will provide hygiene kits, including sanitary pads for girls and hygiene materials for boys, to vulnerable communities, as a part of the government’s commitment to removing barriers to education and promoting gender equality”.
In a related development, the Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Gbeme Horace Kollie, highlighted the importance of menstrual hygiene as a critical issue of dignity and equity.
She explained that ensuring girls have access to sanitary pads and addressing stigma related to menstruation are essential steps in keeping girls in school.
Minister Kollie reaffirmed the government’s commitment to inclusive education, emphasizing that no girl should miss school because of biological realities.
She said that the ministry will support the initiative by advocating for free sanitary pads and working to eliminate stigma around menstrual health, thereby reinforcing the government’s broader goal of fostering equitable opportunities for all children.
Minister Kollie further stressed that menstrual hygiene management is a fundamental human right and a key factor in promoting gender equality.
