MONROVIA, LIBERIA-UNDP-Liberia Resident Representative Aliou Dia has reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to collaborating with the Liberian Government in tackling the country’s pressing housing and slum challenges.
The UN Envoy also expressed strong assurances of the organization’s readiness to provide support and expertise to the National Housing Authority (NHA) in its efforts to develop and implement sustainable housing solutions.
According to Dia, the commitment encompasses potential assistance in areas such as renegotiating and ensuring the return of UN-Habitat, slum upgrading, policy development, technical expertise, and resource mobilization, among others.
The UN Representative committed recently when he paid a significant business visit to the NHA.
Meanwhile, the Management of the NHA highlighted the critical need for collaborative efforts to address the complex housing issues in Liberia.
The NHA Management, headed by Florence Geegbae, also emphasized the importance of international support in achieving its mandate.
The lauded UNDP’s commitment to enhancing a sustained partnership with the housing authority.
Both parties underscored the importance of ensuring access to safe, affordable, and adequate housing for all Liberians, recognizing its crucial role in promoting socio-economic development and overall well-being.
The discussions culminated in a field visit to four slum communities, including Jallah Town, West Point, Slipway, and Sonniwhein in Monrovia.
According to a release, the UNDP also assigned its Site Engineer to work with the NHA Technical and Slum Development Teams.
Both teams have conducted technical assessments and derived technical layouts and designs for probable reform and upgrading of the slum communities.
