Office of Ombudsman Wants People with Disabilities Have Smooth Access to Public Entities

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Chairperson of the Office of the Ombudsman wants a smooth access to public entities by people living with disabilities, especially wheelchair users.

Cllr. Finley Karngar said,” Public facilities must be accessible to everyone, regardless of their physical condition, and the government ministries and agencies must be disability-friendly.”

Cllr. Karngar believes that such a move will give easier access to those living with disability, mainly wheelchair users, as well as fulfil the vision of inclusiveness of everyone in society.

The Chairman of the Ombudsman made the assertion on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, in Congo Town, when he served as guest speaker in observance of International Wheelchair Day.

Meanwhile, Cllr. Karngar has admonished persons living with disability to see themselves as contributors to society by breaking barriers of discrimination and intimidation.

This year’s International Wheelchair Day was celebrated under the national theme:” Empowering Lives, Promoting Physical Accessibility and Inclusion of Wheelchair Users in Liberia.”

Meanwhile, the President of the University of Liberia (UL), Layli Maparyan, says her administration is vigorously leveraging policies that earmark inclusiveness of disabled people at all campuses of the UL.

Madam Maparyan said,” Currently, the University is doing everything possible to improve the physical structures to accommodate every student, including those with disabilities.”

According to her, the move is aimed at ensuring access to quality education for all students, regardless of their physical conditions.

The UL President has, at the same time, committed the University’s willingness to work with the National Commission on Disabilities for programs that will improve learning activities for disabled people.
