Liberian Gov. Announces 42 million Euro Rural Electrification Plan…

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberian Government has announced plans for a forty-two million Euro Rural Electrification Project for south Eastern Liberia sponsored by the European Union.

Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah, disclosing on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at MICAT press briefing in Monrovia, said:” The project will focus on Buchanan, Greenville, and Barclay Ville cities, among others.”

Minister Piah said:” The meeting will also be focused on progress, challenges, and mitigation strategies for effective implementation. For the implementation of the project, the meeting was recently held and co-chaired by EU country representative Nona Deprez.”

The meeting, according to Minister Piah, brought together key stakeholders from the Ministry of Finance, Mines and Energy, and Renewable Energy Agency as well as the interim management team of LEC.

The MICAT Boss said the initiative is the EU’s commitment to expanding energy access and ensuring sustainable energy in Liberia.

At the same time, Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah disclosed that the Renewable Energy Agency, in partnership with the African Development Bank, has commissioned and handed over a transmission and distribution network to Jungle Energy Power.

Minister Piah said the project seeks to connect over six thousand households in Nimba and Bong Counties.

The Information Boss noted that the project is a major step in expanding energy access and driving economic growth in Liberia.

Minister Piah, however, revealed that a delegation from the LEC is in Cote D’Ivoire to sign a power purchase agreement to increase the country’s energy portfolio to fifty megawatts.

The MICAT Boss said:” The LEC has signed two MoUs to address the country’s immediate generation capacity.”
