Sen. Pro-Temp Lawrence Calls for Full Investigation of Fire Occurrence

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Senate Pro-tempore Nyonblee Karngar-Lawrence has called for a thorough investigation into the fire incident at the National Legislature.

In a post on her Official Facebook Page, the Senate Pro-tempore said:” The incident should be investigated to establish the cause of the fire and ensure that justice be served without fear of favor.”

This marks the second fire incident at the National Legislature since the Speakership saga at the House Representatives started. Wednesday’s fire incident completely burnt down the Joint Chamber and left other offices cracked.

Madam Nyonblee Kargar-Lawrence expressed gratitude to the joint team of firefighters who bravely responded to the fire outbreak.

Meanwhile, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has deployed a team of environmental scientists at the Capitol to assess the carbon monoxide pollution caused by the fire in the early hours of Wednesday.

According to an EPA release, the team assessed various parts of the building, including the Rotunda, which houses the Joint Chambers of the National Legislature.

The release quotes the EPA Executive Director as expressing deep concern over the extent of the destruction and that the impact of the fire damage will be felt for a long time.

The release said the EPA Boss emphasized the importance of environmental safety during the ongoing investigation, noting that high levels of carbon monoxide and other pollutants pose a risk to those working at the site.

The team, led by the Environmental Protection Agency Executive Director, Dr. Emmanuel Yarkpawolo, included Deputy Executive Director Dweh Slehwloh Boley, Manager of Environmental Research and Radiation Safety Rafael Ngumbu, and Compliance and Enforcement Manager John Jallah.
