Mano River Union Sec. Gen. Pledges Support to Union’s Secretariat

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Secretary General of the Mano River Union (MRU) has pledged the support of the MRU Secretariat to the protection of the Gola Forest National Park in Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The landscape is a transboundary that covers the two countries.

Mr. Simeon Moriba said:” The MRU Secretariat will support every effort to conserve the National Park.”

Speaking on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, in Monrovia at the close of a two-day Gola Transboundary Coordination Meeting organized by the Society for the Conservation of Nature, Mr. Moriba said the MRU is opened to addressing challenges that fall in the domain of the institution.

Also speaking, the Technical Manager for Conservation at the Forestry Development Authority (FDA), Jerry Nyema, said:” The forest is fast declining due to Coaco Farming, mining, and other illicit activities.”

Technical Manager Jerry Nyuma emphasized the need for Liberia’s bilateral partners to practically do more to protect the country’s forest landscape.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the National Protected Area Authority of Sierra Leone, Thomas Kamara, assured of his institution’s commitment to working with Liberia’s Conservation Actors to address issues affecting protected areas.

Mr. Kamara urged his Liberian counterparts to collaborate with the institution for the full management of the Gola Forest National Park.

He pledged to respond to concerns and challenges being forwarded to his office by his counterparts from Liberia.
