High Commission of Human Rights Office Salutes Creation of Office of War & Economic Crimes Court in Liberia

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Office of the High Commission of Human Rights (OHCHR) has welcomed the creation of the Office of War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia.

OHCHR’s Resident Representative, Christian Masuka, at a round table dialogue on Tuesday, November 19,2024, termed the development as an important moment, expressing his organization’s fullest support of the establishment of the court.

The UN Human Rights Office also encouraged the Executive Director, Cllr. Jallah Barbu, to transform the political will into reality where the rights of the Liberian people will be prioritized.

Also forming part of the dialogue, the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) and the Independent Human Rights Commission (INCHR), in separate statements, renewed to work along with the War Crimes Court Office in promoting human rights and accountability.

LACC’s Executive Chairperson, Cllr. Alexandra Zoe and INCHR Chairperson, Cllr. Dempster Brown, called for enhanced collaboration with the War and Economic Crimes Court Office for its success.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the War and Economic Crimes Court Office, Cllr. Jallah Barbu, said:” I am upbeat about the overwhelming support from integrity, human rights and civil society organizations.”

“With just two weeks in office and with the effective skeletal staff, much has been done in getting the War Crimes Court Office to roll out some important duties and responsibilities as enshrined in the Term of Reference of my office”, he added.

Cllr. Barbu told the gathering that his office has started holding discussions with various stakeholders, who expressed excitements over the new development in the transitional justice action.
