Foreign Ministry Clarifies…

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Foreign Ministry has clarified that there is no change in Liberia’s bilateral relations with the Russian Federation.

The Ministry’s clarification followed an article published in the November 11 Edition of the “Women Voices Newspaper” under the headline “Liberia Strengthens Ties with Russia”.

The Foreign Ministry said at no point did the Liberian Government issue a statement indicating a strengthening of bilateral relations with Russia.

According to a Foreign Ministry release issued recently, Liberia and Russia established bilateral relations in 1992 and in the wake of the civil crisis in Liberia, Russia closed its embassy.

Recently, at the Russia-Africa Summit, Russia Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, disclosed plans to reopen the Russian embassy in Liberia.

The Foreign Ministry noted that the Liberian Government has not received any diplomatic communications from the Russian Federation regarding strengthening relations.
