Liberia Nat’l Bar Asso. Launches Project to Free Pre-trial Detainees

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA) on Wednesday launched its Access to Justice through Pro Bono Legal Aid Representation in Liberia.

The LNBA Pro Bono Legal Aid Representation will help reduce pre-trial detainees from various prison facilities in Montserrado County.

Speaking at the start of the training, the LNBA President, Cllr. Sylvester Rennie urged his colleagues to use the technique that will be learned from the training to free pre-trial detainees from prison, especially at the Monrovia Central Prison.

Pre-trial detainees are those in various cells across the country due to alleged crimes committed without going through the legal process in a court of competent jurisdiction.

According to Cllr. Rennie, the project is expected to last for a year, with the mandate to release two hundred pre-trial detainees in Montserrado County.

The laws of Liberia provide that when crimes are committed by an individual, that person is presumed innocent until proven guilty or the matter is heard and disposed of.
