Gov. of Liberia Dispatches Delegation to Weala…

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Liberian Government has dispatched a delegation to Weala, Margibi County, to ascertain circumstances that led to a protest at the Salala Rubber Company last week.

The protest was staged by people believed to be aggrieved workers and led to the destruction and looting of the Company’s properties.

The delegation is headed by Justice Minister Oswald Tweh and assisted by the Ministers of Agriculture, Dr. Alexander Nuetah, and Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah.

In an ELBC interview on Monday, July 1, 2024, Minister Piah described the action by the aggrieved workers as unacceptable and called for the law to take its course.

He said:” While the Government recognizes the dissatisfaction of the workers, the acts of violence should be discouraged at all costs.”

The Information Minister then called for dialogue as the best alternative to mitigate issues of conflicts.

Meanwhile, twelve people have been arrested in connection with a recent violent protest at the Salala Rubber Company in demand of their salaries and benefits, which resulted in the burning of several facilities.

ELBC Correspondent said:” The suspects were arrested after officers of the Liberia National Police saw them in footage looting the warehouse of the Company during the protest.”

The suspects are currently behind bars in Kakata, Margibi County, and awaiting court trial.

In the meantime, the Management of the Salala Rubber Company has shut down operations.
