Presidential Press Sec. Fofana Says Increase in Teen Age Pregnancies is Due to Lack of Adequate Info…

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Presidential Press Secretary Kulah Fofana has attributed the increase in teenage pregnancies to the lack of adequate information on menstruation.

Madam Fofana said:” The issue of menstrual cycle should be discussed freely in the country.”

Speaking on Tuesday 28, 2024, at a program marking Menstrual Hygiene Day in Monrovia, Madam Fofana called on parents, schools, churches, and mosques to educate girls about menstruation.

The Presidential Press Secretary also pledged to advocate for the reduction of tariffs on sanitary pads.

World Menstrual Hygiene Day is an annual event celebrated globally on May 28 to aim at creating awareness of the stigma surrounding menstruation.

Meanwhile, Gender Minister Gbeme Horace-Kollie has decried the lack of access to sanitary products, and education on menstrual hygiene, as well as proper sanitation facilities in the country.

Minister Kollie said:” Girl’s education is being hindered in the absence of proper hygiene facilities during their menstruation.”

She said the Ministry of Gender will increase awareness and provide sanitary pads to women and girls of menstrual age.

The Gender Minister, Gbeme Horace-Kollie, also noted that the Labour Ministry is aiming to net in over ten million US Dollars as a substantial component to the Government’s Domestic revenue grid.
