House of Rep. Congratulates ECOWAS on 49th Anniversary

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The House of Representatives has congratulated the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on its 49th anniversary.

In a statement on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, the House emphasized Liberia’s commitment to the principles and objectives of ECOWAS.

It highlighted the Organization’s significant contributions to resolving conflicts and promoting democratic governance in the region.

The Liberian Lawmakers then expressed hope for continued collaboration and support for regional initiatives aimed at improving the lives of West African citizens.

At the same time, the House’s Committee on Information Broadcasting, culture, and Tourism is expected to hold a one-day roundtable on media reforms in Liberia.

The event, which takes place at the Capitol, is being held in collaboration with Internews, with support from USAID, the Swedish Government, and the European Union (EU).

The Chairman of the Committee, Representative Bernard Benson, said:” The meeting will focus on critical media law reforms, specifically the proposed bill to establish the Community Radio Sustainability Act.”

Representative Benson said the roundtable will also discuss challenges and opportunities surrounding community radio sustainability and the broader implications for media freedom and development in Liberia.

Media stakeholders, journalists, civil society representatives, and the general public are expected to participate in the important dialogue.
