Swedish Embassy-Liberia Vows to Combat Female Genital Mutilation across Liberia

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Swedish Embassy-Liberia has vowed to work along with relevant stakeholders to combat Female Genital Mutilation across Liberia.

Swedish Embassy Director of Programs, Dwede Tarpeh, committed the Embassy’s support to rigorous awareness through civil society organizations and human rights activists.

Madam Tarpeh was speaking over the weekend at a one-day-long stakeholders’ engagement in Monrovia.

The Swedish Embassy official, however, praised the National Traditional Council of Liberia for placing a three-year moratorium on traditional practices in Liberia.

Madam Tarpeh also extolled Civil Society Organizations, especially the National Council Against Harmful Practices (NACAHP) for gains made in promoting human rights in the Country.

Meanwhile, the NACAHP has spoken of plans to jumpstart nationwide awareness of Female Genital Mutilation.

NACAHP Head of Administration, Mariam Deah, said:” The move is aimed at buttressing the Government’s effort to combat harmful practices against women and girls in Liberia.”

She said her organization has already drafted and presented to relevant stakeholders, a simplified version of the three-year moratorium placed on traditional practices in the Country.

Madam Deah is, however, urging Liberians, especially traditional leaders, to abide by the moratorium, to foster peace and human rights.
