ECOWAS Issues Seven-Day Ultimatum to Coupe Makers in Niger

ABUJA, NIGERIA-The Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the military in Niger to reinstate ousted President Mohammed Bazoum.

The decision was made on Sunday, July 30, 2023; in a communiqué following deliberations at the extraordinary session of the Authority presided over by its Chairman, Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu in Abuja, Nigeria.

Liberian Foreign Minister, Dee-Maxwell Kemayah, represented George Weah at the summit.

Reading the communiqué, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, said:” ECOWAS will take all forceful measures necessary to restore constitutional order in Niger.”

Mr. Touray added that ECOWAS has approved the suspension of all commercial and financial transactions between ECOWAS Member States and Asia, including the freezing of all service transactions, as well as energy transactions.

Meanwhile, the President of the Commission has revealed that the Chiefs of Defense Staff of the member states will proceed to an emergency meeting to plan effective ways to implement a possible military operation to restore President Mohammed Bazoum to office.
