“Increase support and empowerment of women, girls…”-VP Howard-Taylor

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor has reemphasized the need for increased support and empowerment of women and girls across Liberia.

VP Howard-Taylor said:” This can be achieved when parents begin to encourage, support and mentor their children, especially girls, to get ahead of their male counterparts.”

She maintained that such move is necessary because tribal and customary laws keep placing many women and girls at the back in the African society.

The Liberian Vice President also urged parents to give equal treatment and support to all children, stressing that is crucial to stimulating progress of the society.

Speaking during her appearance on Metro FM over the weekend, VP Howard-Taylor assured of her commitment to continue advocating, inspiring and supporting women and girls initiatives.

At the same time, the former President of the University of Liberia (UL), Dr. Ophelia Weeks, has stressed the need for gender equality in the society.

Madam Weeks said:” Women and girls need to be empowered at all levels to compete with their male counterparts.”

She noted that skills training for women are a worthy initiative in transforming the Liberian society.

The former UL President made the statement over the week end when she served as Orator of the Women Rescue Daughters first graduation exercise in Caldwell, outside Monrovia.
