Pres. Weah declares today Friday as International Corruption Day

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President George Weah has declared Friday, December 9, as International Corruption Day, to be observed throughout as a working holiday.

The Proclamation calls on ministries, agencies, local and international organizations and the public to join the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) in collaboration with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and the National Integrity Forum, to plan and implement appropriate programs befitting the occasion.

The Proclamation added that the 14th commemoration of the Day is being celebrated today, December 9, 2022, under theme: “Promoting Integrity and Accountability for Increase Citizens’ Participation in the Fight against Corruption”.

A Foreign Ministry release issued recently says the General Assembly of the United Nations on October 31, 2003, designated December 9th of each year as International Corruption Day.

The release says the significance of the observance of the Day is to raise awareness about corruption and promote anti-corruption activities.

Meanwhile, Senate Pro-Tempt Albert Chie has broken silence over the United States sanctioned former officials of the Liberian Government.

Senator Chie said:” The sanctioned individuals have their rights to participate in any elections, once they have not been found guilty by any court of competent jurisdiction.”

He added that stopping the former officials from contesting the elections will be a violation of their rights.

The Senate Pro-Tempt made the statement at the adjournment of the final segment of the Fifth Session of the 54th National Legislature on Thursday, December 8, 2022.

Senator Chie believes actions are in the Supreme interest of the Country and its citizens.
