US Gov’t launches Mary’s Meals School Feeding Program

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The United States Government, through USAID and Mary’s Meal has launched a school feeding program.

The four-million USD partnership program will work with the Education Ministry to fund daily nutritious meals for more than forty-five-thousand school going children.

The targeted beneficiaries are drawn from two-hundred-forty schools in Bomi, Bong, Gbarpolu, Cape Mount and Montserrado Counties for the next two years.

Speaking at the launch on Thursday, December1, 2022, in VOA Community, Brewerville, Mary’s Meals Country Director Paula Nawrocki said:” The feeding program will help address the immediate needs of children, and tackle food insecurity in Liberia.”

She added that the latest support will make a huge difference to children, families and local communities across Liberia.

Madam Nawrocki commended the US Government for providing sponsorship towards the program.

For his part, US Ambassador Michael McCarthy called for more support to increase agriculture production, food security and nutrition in Liberia.

Ambassador McCarthy said:” Liberia has a rich soil that can be utilized to boost agriculture production in the Country, and it is now time for all Liberians to take advantage of the Country’s rich resources to reduce poverty.”

The US Diplomat also reaffirmed his Government’s support to partnering with Mary’s Meal and the Liberian Government to ensure that students benefit from the program.

In remarks, Deputy Information Minister for Instruction, Alexander Duopu, highlighted the importance of school feeding program in Liberian schools, and commended Mary’s Meal and USAID for partnering with the Liberian Government to support the education sector.

Meanwhile, some of the beneficiaries have lauded Mary’s Meals and USAID for the feeding program in their schools.
