Elections Observer Groups express worries over elections preparations

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Two leading elections observation groups have expressed concerns over preparations leading to the holding of the 2023 Presidential and Legislative elections.

The Election Coordinating Committee (ECC) and Liberia Elections Observation Network (LEON) said they are concern about the slow pace of progress by the National Elections Commission (NEC).

According to ECC and LEON, delay in access to public information surrounding the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) could affect the timely conduct of the election.

A statement read by ECC Coordinator, Oscar Bloh, said delay in the conduct of the Census and Voter Registration run the risk of not capturing qualified voters, among others.

Mr. Bloh said:” Delay by NEC and PPCC surrounding the Biometric Voter Registration System may reduce public interest in the electoral process.”

He recommended, on behalf of the two organizations, for Government, through NEC and PPCC, to reach a compromise on the biometric procurement process and constantly keep the public informed.

Oscar Bloh also recommended a regular meeting between international partners supporting the elections and political parties, NEC and CSOs aimed at formulating mechanism to mitigate scenarios that have the potential to undermine the electoral process.
