Develop mechanism to end power theft-Pres. Weah

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President George Weah is urging the Management of the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), to develop a mechanism to end power theft.

President Weah said:” Power theft continues to impede the growth of the energy sector for which a plan must be developed to curb the menace.”

He was speaking Tuesday, August 16, 2022, when he commissioned the new electricity LEC Sub-station on the Old Road in Monrovia.

The Liberian Leader also praised the current Management Team of the LEC, for the steady transformation of the entity.

According to him, having a management team of Liberians was one of the series of proposals made to improve the LEC.

Meanwhile, President Weah has commended the European Union (EU) and other partners for their continuous support to the electricity sector.

The commissioning of the sub-station is part of projects dedicated by President Weah during his ongoing tour of Montserrado County.

Also speaking, LEC Board Chairman, Monie Captan, said:” Liberia is expected to begin benefiting electricity through the Transco CLSG line by November this year.”

Mr. Captan said:” The goal of the LEC is to provide electricity to over two-hundred-thousand persons by next year.”

The LEC Board Chair also said that electricity supply has reached Robertsports, Grand Cape Mount County, with efforts to connect Grand Gedeh County soon.

Also speaking, EU Ambassador to Liberia Laurent Delahousse said:” Power theft is not only criminal but endangers the lives of citizens.”

Ambassador Delahousse also frowned at other community residents in the constant habit of attacking LEC workers fighting power theft.

The EU Ambassador thanked the Liberian Government for facilitating the construction of the sub-station, which, he said will help residents of the benefiting communities.
