Gov’t clarifies against some opposition politicians’ lies…..

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The attention of the Liberian Government has been drawn to attempt by some politicians to spread lies about its tuition free policy at the University of Liberia, and other public universities and colleges in the Country.

President George Weah, in 2018, declared that students are free to attend those institutions without having to pay tuition.

According to the Ministry of Information, Culture Affairs and Tourism (MICAT), the policy has been in effect ever since the pronouncement was made, thus reducing the cost of education, a major pillar of President Weah’s Pro-Poor Agenda.

It clarifies that this does not preclude students from paying registration and other fees the schools charge.

The UL, for instance, charges a minimum of two-thousand-two-hundred-fifty Liberian Dollars per semester, and said amount is paid for totally by Government.

The release said further that the clarification comes in the wake of falsehood being spread by senior members of the opposition community on social media.

The MICAT Statement adds that the Government finds it appalling that some politicians will still seek to engage in the dissemination of false news at the time the Government is opting to elevate the public discourse.

Meanwhile, the Government also denounces reports that it is only paying the West African Examination Council (WAEC) of twelve graders in public schools.

It further clarified that the fee is being covered by Government for all twelve graders, and that there has been no change of policy on these matters.
