MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Supreme Court of Liberia has ordered the incarceration of former Defense Minister, Brownie Samukai, for failing to restitute the stolen Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) Pension Funds.

The Supreme Court issued the writ of arrest on Thursday, January 27, 2022, after Mr. Samukai and his two co-defendants failed to meet the High Court’s deadline for the restitution of the money.

It can be recalled in February 2021, the Supreme ordered the disgraced former Defense Minister and two deputies, Joseph Johnson and Nyema Donkor, to pay at least fifty-percent of the stolen AFL Pension within six months or risk being jailed.

Supporters of the Lofa County Senator-elect, at the time, raised some money and paid what they believed was his share of the fifty-percent.

But prosecutors took an exception, arguing with the High Court that Mr. Samukai and his co-defendants were to pay as a group and not individually.

Mr. Samukai has been unable to take his seat as Lofa County Senator, after the Supreme Court of Liberia placed a hold on his certification by the National Elections Commission (NEC).
